As the race for the vacancy in the Cincinnati City Council heats up, the three campaigns will need to understand who their electorate is. To find out more, The Daily Dishrag sent out a benchmark survey to students in Dr. Nestheide’s POLI277 International Relations class and Prof. Tisone’s POLI140 American Government and Politics class. Across both classes, the most important issues are the opioid crisis and gentrification. The less important issues for the electorate appear to be transportation and the local economy. The Daily Dishrag believes that this reflects a slightly liberal partisan lean among the electorate.
Out of the fifty-six students in the electorate, thirty-six of them participated in our benchmark survey. An overwhelming majority of the electorate is not from the Cincinnati area. In general, these political science students believe that Cincinnati issues affect them. However, a minority of students admitted to being well-aware of the city’s current political situation. Part of this may be attributed to the fact that Dr. Nestheide and Prof. Tisone’s classes are made up of mostly of first-years and sophomores. The survey reports that a slight majority of the electorate is male.
In terms of media consumption, the electorate is split. There is no consensus as to where students would like to receive their Cincinnati City Council election news. As of now, news can be obtained at The Daily Dishrag official website and on Twitter @TDishrag.
All three candidates have launched their official campaign websites. We have provided links to them here:
