With the sudden departure of a Cincinnati city council member, certain local figures have been quietly alerting the press of their potential candidacy, one being small business owner, Vanessa Abbott. In a private interview on Friday, Abbott confirmed her campaign, solidifying her as the first woman and first Republican to enter the race.

Abbott has been open about her Republican Party affiliation, having financially supported previous Republican campaigns, specifically the Romney campaign in 2012. Despite this established network of donations, Abbott plans on completely self-funding her city council campaign.

Abbott has worn many hats, besides Republican, in her 39 years. A metro-Cincinnatian, she grew up in nearby Mason and is a proud product of Mason Public Schools. She spent her undergraduate years at the University of Cincinnati as a member of the ROTC program, and graduated with a degree in business. Abbott continued her service and served two tours as one of the first female army rangers in Afghanistan. Upon her return to the states, Abbott established a career consulting firm downtown to aid veterans rejoining the workforce. Between her ambitious career endeavors, Abbott married her college sweetheart, Jake, and settled down in Westwood. They have two children, Lucy, 9, and Samuel, 6.

The race is still in its early stages, and Abbott has yet to publicly announce her candidacy and platform, but anticipates an official announcement in the coming week. Her team contact information should be made available next week.
