Vanessa Abbott Expands on Topics from Meet the Press Interview
Cincinnati— 4/24/2019 — City Council Candidate Vanessa Abbott has expanded on the issues that were not expressed during the Meet the Press Interview last week, including gun violence, homelessness, and gentrification.
“I hoped to clarify my policies on several more city-wide issues that I believe we can overcome,” said Vanessa Abbott this past week.
As far as gun violence, Abbott wishes to expand Shot Spotter, an electronic response system to gunshots. This technology would allow for the Cincinnati Police Department to better track gun violence and address the issue on the spot.
Gun violence can further be reduced, Abbott argues, by fixing the other problems facing Cincinnati—specifically by targeting the interconnected web of the opioid epidemic, homelessness, and gentrification. As she addressed in her recent press conference, Abbott wants to improve access to resources, such as shelters, for those with opioid addictions. Furthermore, by providing homeless shelters specifically for people age 18-25, one of the largest demographics affected by homelessness, Abbott believes opioid addiction can be prevented.
Abbott also argues for limiting the negative effects of gentrification, i.e. housing displacement and homelessness, while still supporting entrepreneurs and new businesses. In Over-the-Rhine, developers currently get tax breaks—Abbott would only offer these tax breaks to developers who build affordable housing, or developers who build luxury housing but donate a percentage of their earnings to affordable housing units. Abbott hopes to continue driving these issues as a center force of her campaign as the only republican, female, veteran candidate.
